Wax coating is widely used as a postharvest treatment to extend shelf life and maintain fruit quality. However, its influence on fruit storage and preservation remains insufficiently explored. In this study, apples and pears were treated with various concentrations of liquid wax. The treatment delayed color change during storage, inhibited ethylene production and respiration identity, and alleviated reductions in fruit firmness, titratable acidity, and ascorbic acid (AsA) content. An in-depth investigation was conducted on fruits treated with an 80% concentration of liquid wax. Compared with the control, wax-coated fruits exhibited a denser epidermal structure, slower chlorophyll degradation and carotenoid accumulation, and alterations in soluble sugar composition, particularly a significant reduction in sucrose content. Additionally, wax coating enhanced phenylalanine ammonia-lyase activity while reducing the activities of polyphenol oxidase, peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, and catalase. These changes in enzymatic activity inhibited the declines in total phenolic and total flavonoid contents and suppressed the accumulation of malondialdehyde, superoxide anion, and hydrogen peroxide. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction analysis further indicated that wax coating altered the expression levels of genes associated with these physiological responses. Collectively, these findings suggested that wax coating formed a protective film on the fruit surface, effectively delaying ripening, preserving nutritional quality, and enhancing antioxidant capacity. This study provides novel theoretical insights into the postharvest storage and preservation of climacteric fruits.","specialId":"","includeLanguage":"1","retraction":"未撤稿","price":0.00,"publishScope":"1","printDateStr":"2026-03-01","revRecdDateStr":"2025-10-22","abstractKeyPoints":"","cResourceType":{"id":"23813ed81a504553b9f3b3dc778fdafc","isNewRecord":false,"resourceNameCh":"开放获取","resourceNameEn":"Open Access","path":"/images/oa.png","code":"OA"},"publisher":{"isNewRecord":true,"nameCh":"浙江大学出版社有限责任公司","nameEn":"Zhejiang University Press","coverPath":"1776849242325778432","abbreviated":"JZU","partial":false},"mostReadType":"article","latestVersion":"1","baseId":"C16E4B80B75A463CA728E83FB1F52B5A","crosUpdateTime":1778329429000,"buyStatus":true,"favoriteStatus":false,"licenseType":"open-access","status":1,"elocationNum":0,"articleSort":0,"resourceTypeStr":"open-access","purchaseDateStr":"2025-08-15","acceptDateStr":"2025-10-26","createDateStr":"2026-05-09","onlineDateStr":"2026-02-17","fundingStatement":"This research was supported by the <funding-source id=\"FS1\">Liaoning Science and Technology Plan Project</funding-source> (No. <award-id rid=\"FS1\">2023-MSLH-280</award-id>), China.","isAuth":false},"isAuthor":false,"metaInfo":"Pages 84-101","isAuth":true,"journalType":"EN","pdfPath":"https://academax.com/zju-parse/view/pdf/","headingList":[{"id":"2053088084077187072","isNewRecord":false,"nameZh":"ARTICLES","nameEn":"ARTICLES"}],"islease":false,"lang":"en_US"}
